From Lab to Market: How LabStart Fellows Adriana Esparza and Brian Worfolk Are Revolutionizing Climate Tech

Meet two entrepreneurs transforming breakthrough technologies into real-world climate solutions

The journey from research lab to market reality is rarely straightforward. Today, we spotlight two LabStart fellows navigating this path with remarkable success, turning cutting-edge technologies into ventures that address critical environmental challenges.

Adriana Esparza: Closing the Loop on Industrial Plastics

Growing up in a family working in automobile manufacturing, Adriana Esparza saw firsthand the challenge that industrial plastic waste presents. Her company, Hyphae Composites, is developing advanced recycling solutions that transform this waste into the exact same molecule with equal or better qualities than virgin material.

"The LabStart fellowship gave me the runway, resources, and connections to turn my climate tech idea into a viable business," Esparza shares. "I'm leaving this program not just with a startup but with a support network that will last a lifetime."

Hyphae Composites offers manufacturers an on-site solution to turn defective plastic parts back into high-quality materials. This circular approach not only reduces waste but also helps companies meet increasingly stringent sustainability requirements.

Brian Worfolk: Turning Emissions into Clean Fuel

Brian Worfolk's Lukera Energy tackles two environmental challenges at once: reducing methane emissions and creating a clean alternative to heavy fuel oil. The company's modular technology converts methane into carbon-negative methanol at room temperature, without requiring additional hydrogen.

What makes Lukera's approach particularly promising is its focus on marine shipping—an industry that urgently needs cleaner fuel alternatives. By creating methanol that can directly replace heavy fuel oil, Lukera Energy offers a practical solution for one of the world's most carbon-intensive sectors.
